At Content Matters, we are dedicated to making information accessible to everyone. Our recent project with the Chapel Hill Hill Public Library exemplifies the impact of plain language design. This initiative aims to help English, and non-English speakers in North Carolina with the complexities of the NC Division of Motor Vehicles (NC DMV) processes.

Navigating the DMV’s requirements can be daunting. This was the case for many residents in Chapel Hill, who found themselves unable to understand essential information that would enable them to legally drive.

Recognizing the need for clarity and accessibility, we partnered with the Chapel Hill Public Library to create a guidebook tailored to residents navigating the driver’s permit and license process. Our approach was meticulous and phased:

1. Content Review and Analysis: We started by gathering insights from language focus groups and analyzing various text files to ensure the content was both accurate and easy to understand.
2. Plain Language Implementation: By adhering to plain language principles, we crafted content that was straightforward, making sure it was clear and concise.
3. Design and Layout: The guidebook was designed to be visually engaging with relevant images and diagrams that supported the text, making complex information more digestible.

The result was transformative. The Chapel HIll Library now offers the ‌North Carolina Driver’s Guidebook in English, Burmese, Karen, Spanish, and Arabic. It provides residents with clear instructions and visual aids to simplify ‌DMV processes. This not only prepares them for their driving test but also instills a sense of confidence and independence.

This project highlights the value of plain language in:

• Enhancing Comprehension: Our client could understand and navigate the NC DMV requirements with ease.
• Building Confidence: With clear guidelines, residents feel prepared and confident to take their driving test.
• Fostering Independence: The knowledge gained allows residents to move forward without relying heavily on others for interpretation.
